Internal Thermal Insulation (ITI) involves fixing insulating materials to the inside face of exterior walls. Cladding consists of placing a protective covering over the insulating layer already installed. This technique consists of fixing insulating panels directly to the exterior walls, then covering them with a finishing coating. It is one of the most widespread solutions in the context of ITE, particularly for its simplicity of implementation and the diversity of finishes available.
The insulating coating is applied directly to the surface of the existing facade. The thermal resistance of an insulator, expressed by the R value, corresponds to the ratio between its thickness and its thermal conductivity (λ). The higher this value, the more efficient the insulation. In Luxembourg, regulations impose a minimum thermal resistance for walls: greater than 4 m².K/W in new construction, and greater than 3.7 m².K/W in renovation.
